The Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189) is a points-tested permanent residence visa for skilled workers who are not sponsored by an employer, state or family member. You submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) in SkillSelect and must be invited to apply. The current minimum points score is 65, but invitations usually go to higher scores.

Australia Skilled Independent (subclass 189): overview
The 189 visa isn't tied to an employer or a state, so you choose where to settle. Because there's no sponsor, competition for invitations is strong, and your points score — built from age, English, experience, education and other factors — decides when you're invited.
The Australian Government has proposed a rewrite of the points test from July 2027. Invitations issued before then are expected to be assessed under the current rules, so timing matters.
